Elizabeth Taylor was known for her beauty and presence on screen, and also for her staggering love of jewelry. She wrote the book “Elizabeth Taylor: My Love Affair with Jewelry” and amassed an collection estimated at a stunning $30 Million.
Her diamond pendant known as the “Taj Mahal” has caused some controversy, as the anonymous buyer of the $8 million dollar piece cancelled the sale, believing the item was not from the Mughal period. The item was inscribed with the name of the wife of Mughal Emperor Shah Jahangir and was believed to be a gift to her and later a commission in her memory.
Christie’s auction house agreed to the return but the trustees of Taylor’s estate have yet to return more than $7 million dollars.
Taylor’s jewelry includes stunning pieces by Bvlgari, Cartier, and Van Cleef & Arpels, most of which were gifted by husband Richard Burton including the 33.18 carat D color, VS1 clarity “Elizabeth Taylor Diamond”.
