Expertly crafted on the island of Ni’ihau Hawai’i, this lei is truly a work of art.
Strung in the Kipona style, with alternating sections of Momi (Dove Shells) and Kahelilani (Turban Shells), three strands of shells have been skillfully combined to create a cascade of colors.
The Momi shells are of the following colorations: Ke’oke’o (white/off-white), Onikiniki (white with black/dark brown stripes), Kahakaha (deep gold with darker stripes) Uliuli (blue/deep gray), and Lenalena (yellow).
Kahelelani shells display the colors of: Akala (flower pink), Maku’e (brown/burgundy), Ulaula (red), Oma’oma’o (green), Ele ele (black/dark brown), and Kamoa (yellow).
These strands are connected by a 20x27mm Pōleholeho (decorative shell which ties the ends of each strand together) of the ‘āpu’upu’u (bumpy cowrie) variety.
This lei measures approximately 39 inches in length, creating a 19.5 inch ‘drop length’ when worn.
